首战告捷等于一半胜利.
A good beginning is half the battle.
Every good football manager is fully aware of the great importance of getting off to a good start. He knows that the team that starts well will not only "clock up" some valuable scores, but will gain in confidence over the opposition. On the other hand, the team that gets off to a slow start will not only fall behind of the score board, but will also loose confidence and possibly begin to despair.
If you are a student you are well aware of the importance of the first days of the school year. You are starting to study French.Let us imagine that laziness dominates your first classes. It all sounds so easy, mere repetition! The teacher is treating the most basic elements of the French language, and these will surely be referred to hundreds of times throughout the year.It will be easy to pick them up latter."Relaxing a little during the first weeks of the school year has harmed no one".So you think at the start of the term,so many a student has thought, and has,in fact, never recovered.
By dedicating time to the most basics elements of the language,by really getting a grip on them, one is well prepared to make progress.Great familiarity with the basics provides one with the ideal conditions to understand and grasp the more difficult parts of the language.A good start is truly half the battle,a bad start is half defeat.
We are trying to see the importance of getting off to a good start, and would now like to apply this to something very simple:to our own day.How we start our day is of great importance. The beginning will determine the attitude which penetrates and pervades our entire day.Do we start on a natural or on a supernatural tone?Do we start by looking in the mirror or by looking to God?Do we begin by looking to ourselves or to Our Lord Who has been loving all night long?
Let this be our first consideration:We have slept for seven or eight hours, and during every minute, nay every second,of that time God was thinking of us,He was loving us,He was keeping us in existence.St.Paul tells us that "In Him we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28).Is it not most reasonable that we return the compliment as soon as possible? Is it not a sign of love and thanksgiving that, bright and early,we do for God,what He has being doing for us throughout the entire night?Ought we not start our day by thinking of Him,loving Him,and ensuring that His light continues to exist in our hearts?
Prayer is the ideal way to start our day.God has been looking on us lovingly throughout the night, let us now return this glance of love.By starting with prayer we are showing our intention to make our day a day of love,a day of charity. We want to offer our day to God,we desire to fulfill His will throughout our waking hours. We want to avoid sin,and bring others to the happiness of loving Jesus Christ.Christ is our Day,and we desire that our day belong to Christ.
Our morning prayer need not be prolonged. In fact it would seem most prudent to start our day with some very short prayers. Two or three minutes on our knees would be ideal.Remember the words of Our Lord:"He who is faithful in very little is faithful also in much" (Lk 6:10).Fidelity to some short prayers every morning will help us to remain faithful to Christ throughout the day.
Our morning prayers may be short, but most important of all,let them be penetrating.Let them pierce ceiling and roof, let them move swiftly through the galaxies and arrive pure and undiluted into the Heart of God.Let us make a real effort to enter into personal contact with God.Let us try to overcome our morning drowsiness and raise our hearts to Our Father,Who loves us and desires to be loved by us.Let us present ourselves before the face of God,and "allow" Him to love us.
A good start is truly half the battle.Every trainer knows it,every teacher and student is aware of it,let us Christians be even more conscious of it.Let us start our day with God and without any doubt He will accompany us throughout our lives.
We enclose a small booklet with some short prayers which you could use to start your day with God.
