Statistical analysis of confined high strength concrete
Model uncertainty associated with the maximum
strength,ductility and toughness of high strength
concrete confined by rectilinear ties is statistically quantif
ied for ten analytical models.These models are
applied to predict the results of 108 large-scale specimens
tested under uniaxial compression.An empirical model
is proposed for the complete description of the stressstrain
curve of tie-confined high strength concrete and
proves to be in good agreement with the aforementioned
data.
L’incertitude du modèle vis-à-vis de la résistance,de la ductilité
et de la dureté du béton à haute résistance confiné par armature
transversale rectangulaire est évaluée pour dix modèles de calcul.
Ces modèles sont utilisés pour évaluer les résultats de 108
spécimens à grande échelle soumis aux sollicitations de compression
uniaxiale.Un modèle empirique est ensuite proposé pour la
description complète de la courbe contrainte - déformation du
béton à haute résistance confiné par armature transversale,et elle
se trouve en bon accord avec les résultats expérimentaux cités cidessus.
1.INTRODUCTION
In reviewing the research on high strength concrete
(HSC) and the applications of the material in the construction
industry it is noticeable that there is a systematic
experimental investigation,as well as an increasing adoption
of this new material.Over the last years a considerable
amount of research work has been carried out on the
mechanical properties of HSC.This effort was a result of
the forecasts that HSC is the material to be used widely in
the near future,in structures such as high-rise buildings,
long-span bridges,tunnels,tanks,and offshore platforms.
Despite the growing interest in utilising HSC in civil
engineering works,additional information is needed in
order to exploit in full its well-documented technical and
economical benefits in earthquake threatened areas,where
strength as well as ductility are of primary importance.It
has long been recognised that the latter two parameters
increase substantially whenever the state of stress is triaxial
compression (confined concrete).Hence,due to the brittle
nature of HSC under axial compression,the presence of
lateral reinforcement becomes more significant than in
normal strength concrete counterparts.
Problems of confined concrete have long been recognised
and investigated both experimentally and analytically in the past.Several confinement models have been
developed to predict the stress-strain behaviour of normal,
as well as high strength concrete.All the proposed
models are based on previous experimental work where
several parameters have been derived from the statistical
processing of the results.
