The author uses flashback. He didn’t tell the reason why Hester (H) was punished at first. While after a long passage, it talked about the reason. About the love affair of H and the minister—Dimmesdale (D), the author didn't tell much either. The whole story focused on the punishment to H, the contempt by the townspeople, the torture Roger put on D and the misery D felt. It was in a puritan society and all the townspeople felt shame for what H had done. But after the hard working of H , they changed their ideas, especially at last she became rich. D, in my point of view, was a cowed. He was too frightened to admit his sin, and hid it in his deepest heart. However, his misery grew day by day and at last he announced it to the public. Pearl, the daughter of the two, was wild. But I thought she is kind of smart. What she said always to the point. So I think Hawthorne set the character not just a little girl. Maybe she was a child sent from god, just as H thought. H was brave and suffered by the scarlet letter on her chest. D hid his crime but also suffered by the scarlet letter, which was in his heart. People in the world are the same as people in the town. The think themselves are pure and noble and hate these people who seemed evil. But in fact, they are much more evil. They don’t have their own idea and affected by what others think.
